Located in the Old Town section of Scottsdale, Ariz., Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West (SMoW) was founded in 2015 and is now a Smithsonian Affiliate organization. Its goal is to help museum-goers “see the West from a whole new perspective,” and to that end it has been mounting a series of special exhibitions. The latest in this series showcases the collection of Western art enthusiast Gilbert Waldman, a resident of the Phoenix–Scottsdale area and a founding member of SMoW’s board of trustees.

“By Beauty Possessed: Gilbert Waldman Collects the West” runs through August 23 in the museum’s Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust Fine Arts Gallery and features over 50 works by nearly 40 artists, including landscapes, depictions of wildlife, portraits, and studies of the diverse cultures of the region.
