Market: Shanghaied
November 2007
at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, welcomed a crowd of more than 25,000 that included both local and foreign collectors, gallery owners and artists. Among the works on show at the 130 booths were Cang Xin’s prostrate sculptural self-portraits, Yoshitomo Nara’s mischievous children, the laughing faces of Yue Minjun, and of course a few Mao references. A special section curated by artistic director Pierre Huber spotlighted 16 contemporary stars such as Wang Guangyi, whose work is represented by ShanghART and Chen Zhen, who is with Galleria Continua. Asking prices at the fair ranged from $1,000 all the way up to $17 million.
Half the galleries were Western and half were Asian. "This was a truly international fair with a strong focus on Asia," says director Lorenzo Rudolf. Pearl Lam, a dealer with galleries in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, says, "ShContemporary shows that Shanghai is not just a business city; it has its own culture and art scene. Asian art today is reflecting the globalized world we are living in, and at the same time questioning homogeneous culture."
Rudolf is planning the 2008 edition of ShContemporary to open on the second day of the Shanghai Biennial next September.
