Mercanteinfiera, an international fair of modernism, antiques and collectibles, takes over the Italian city of Parma every fall and spring. This year’s spring edition, held February 27–March 6, brings hundreds of dealers from every corner of Europe and beyond to Fiere di Parma, a 45,000-square-meter exhibition space. The fair boasts everything from ornate antiques, Old Master paintings, modernist design, Italian art glass and Arte Povera pieces to fine jewelry and vintage designer handbags. This being Italy, after all, perhaps the only thing better than pursuing the lavish wares on offer is taking a break with an espresso at one of the many cafés tucked into the corners of the exhibition space.

Ushio and Noriko Shinohara are the subjects of the Academy Award®-nominated documentary Cutie and the Boxer (dir. Zachary Heinzerling), which premieres on PBS on September 18 at 10 p.m. Eastern as part of the POV documentary series.

The couple, who are both artists, have been living and working in New York City for the last 40 years. Ushio, who has been a prominent Pop artist and action painter in Japan since the 1960s, is best known stateside for punching canvases with paint-soaked boxing gloves and for making motorcycle-shaped assemblages. Noriko, a painter who cites Caravaggio and Classical art as leading influences, has most recently found success with her “Cutie” series—an elegant and humorous narrative painting project that marries Japanese-inflected calligraphy and the contemporary graphic novel.

Art & Antiques recently had the opportunity to visit the couple at their DUMBO home and studio, spending an afternoon discussing the documentary, their work, and their sometimes tumultuous, yet enduring relationship.

The Museum of Biblical Art (MOBIA) in New York presents 23 examples of early Florentine Renaissance sculpture from the collection of the Museo dell’ Opera del Duomo with its show “Sculpture in the Age of Donatello: Renaissance Masterpieces from Florence Cathedral.” Here, Art & Antiques takes a peek inside the exhibition, which puts on view breathtaking works by Donatello, Brunelleschi, Nanni di Banco, and Luca della Robbia that rarely set their meticulously sculpted feet on American soil. The exhibition should not be missed, not only because of its rare and magnificent material, but also because its closing on June 14 will, sadly, coincide with the closing of MOBIA itself.

Christie’s New York will auction off the collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth on March 17-21. But before the sale, Art & Antiques was given a peek inside the late collector and scholar’s Upper East Side apartment, which was left exactly as he had decorated it. Throughout his lifetime, Ellsworth amassed a trove of rare pieces of art and furnishings from China, India, the Himalayas, and Southeast Asia, which is lauded as one of the greatest collections of Asian art in the history of collecting. These unique works harmonize with an equally impressive assemblage of English furniture, silver, and objets d’art to form a truly exquisite living space.
